I found out about Hasil Adkins in a roundabout way after hearing him featured on the OST of Asia Argento’s adaptation of the memoir novel The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. At first it seems like an unlikely pairing, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. Just like the film Hasil’s work revels in the darkness found in places like the West Virginia backwoods and subverts classic Americana by seasoning it with whacked out morbid and alien pop culture references. Both also make you want to take a long shower after the experience is over. Plus any guy who records an entire album dedicated to chicken deserves to be celebrated. Long before The Cramps and “psychobilly”; long before rappers were throwing in signature catchphrases prior to starting all their verses; there was Hasil Adkins.

#SKINNYPUPPYSUNDAYS Week 3

Picked this week’s selection off The Process, another LP that was pretty divisive (maybe even more so than Greater Wrong). Once again, I fall on the supporting side. Yes, you can tell that a now Danzig-less Rick Rubin was looking for his own dark NIN type thing. (Even more ironic since Danzig’s Blackacidevil would’ve been closer to what was wanted) But in my opinion The Process actually sounds better and better as the years pass. And if you’re a fan of Cevin Key’s other projects like Download and Tear Garden, you’ll hear bits of pieces of those throughout the album.  I’m sure you all know the turbulent history that accompanies this record. “Cult” is probably my favorite track. Guess I’ll close out this post in the same way the album did … D.R. Goettel 1964-1995

Since I stretched the #FEARFRIDAY deadline once again, I am stretching the #FEARFRIDAY selection. So supposedly Dave Mustaine “lost” the original vocal tracks to this album which is why the remastered 2006 has Mustaine doing Lee’s vocal parts and essentially turning a side project into a half-assed Megadeth album. Imagine Pepper Keenan redoing the Down albums, Al Jourgensen redoing the Lard albums, etc; sure, it’s an intriguing listen but it just wouldn’t fit. Hey, now it’s just easier for everyone that wants to buy a $2.00 copy of the original Craving on Amazon marketplace. Megadeth will always be one of my favorites but leave the side projects in the past or remaster them with the same credits. What’s even better is that there are people who are just as passionate but with a view 180 degrees from mine. Isn’t that what great art is supposed to do?

The Younger Louder and Snottier version of this LP was the first punk album I owned that wasn’t an Epitaph band. In fact I think the reason I bought this one was that I read an interview with Greg from Bad Religion where he was talking about how badass these guys called “The Dead Boys” were. Purchase anything Dead Boys / Stiv Bators and you’ll immediately feel like you’re better than everyone else. And well, you are…

I guess I never paid much mind to the title because for years I always thought I owned this album but with a different cover. Then I found out that I had the “raw” version and these were the official “polished” tracks. So I’m still getting used to these songs. It’s all relative cause this shit is still pretty grimy.

#SKINNYPUPPYSUNDAYS Week 2

I know this album got a lot of hate especially when it was supposed to be the “return” (Mythmaker was more like it). But if you consider it an Ohgr solo album with Cevin Key producing it becomes amazing. On the flip-side Ohgr’s DIMD  sounded like a good old Skinny Puppy album.

See it’s all about reframing…

“1977 and my friend had just joined Black Oak Arkansas…

I stashed half a lude and half a joint way underneath the console and 40 miles outside of Little Rock, was doing about 80 following a truck when I got hit in the face with a spotlight. Busted! Arkansas State Troopers, star on the car, bad motherfuckers…”

Classic.

A few years ago while I was still down in Florida for school, a friend got me into that whole Adult Swim thing. I remember thinking that it was some of the funniest shit known to man until I spent Thanksgiving back up North and watched it sober for the first time. Turns out it was just all the substances I was getting ripped on that had me rolling on the floor…not the talking ball of meat.

The Venture Bros wasn’t part of the lineup back then and I’m almost sure it’s also too “clever” for it’s own good. I’m going to withhold judgment though just because the soundtrack composed by JG Thirwell - one of my all time favorite musical minds - is so badass. It’s right up there with the best stuff from his Steroid Maximus project. (Think Les Baxter and some Looney Toons trapped in a 70’s Italian Poliziotteschi film which has been submerged in liquid mescaline)

#SKINNYPUPPYSUNDAYS starts NOW!!

Kicking things off I decided to go with the live “Worlock” off Back and Forth Vol. 5 Live in Dresden. I love this version and it’s a great sales pitch for why you should raise the funds - even if it means holding up a Cold Stone Creamery at gunpoint - for a ticket if Cevin & Nivek are bringing the blood and gristle to a stage around your way.

I’m interested to see other people’s #skinnypuppysundays picks…

Got to see A Perfect Circle last week in NYC. It was an incredible show and everything you’d expect: a huge sound, haunting arrangements and minimal interaction with the audience (aside from the ultra dry MJK humor that preceded the immediate encore… “this is the part where we’d walk off and then you’d clap wondering if we’d come back, my costume change is switching water bottles”)

What I really wasn’t expecting was them playing half of their George W. Bush-era Emotive “covers” album. But it turned out to be a nice surprise since they completely changed the harmonies and arrangements of most (especially the Crucifix and Black Flag selections)

The cover song I was waiting all night for them to play was their version of this Failure song. Sadly they didn’t and I’m not sure if they ever have live. “The Nurse Who Loved Me” is the only song APC covers that is not on Emotive. Rather, it is buried towards the end of their Thirteenth Step album. Both versions are beautiful but I still prefer the original.
